Hitting Your Fitness Goals
Many of us have jobs that cause us to have sit down most of the day behind a computer. Sitting for long periods of time can have an adverse effect on our health and even shorten our lifespans. It has become such an epidemic with the increase in technology use and dependence that sitting at your job all day has been dubbed “the sitting disease,” by U.S. News and World Report. Since sitting is so detrimental to your health, it is important to find ways to move during the day and beyond. Having fun ways to hit your fitness goals will help keep you motivated and wanting to move your body.
Take Frequent Breaks
We’ve all heard about being “in the zone” at work which causes us to sit for longer periods of time. But it is important not only for your physical well-being, but also your mental well-being to take frequent breaks when working. Ideally getting up and walking around every hour. You can use that time to refresh mentally and fight fatigue by getting your heart rate up and your muscles moving. You can walk around your office or outside if it is nice out. Taking breaks to walk around also gives you something to look forward to during your day. Including coworkers into this routine can also help make it a more fun, social event.
Attend Calls Standing Up
If you can, attend your calls standing up. If you aren’t part of a video meeting, then get up and move around while on your calls. You can easily walk around with pen and paper in hand to take notes as needed. Walking or standing up during your calls may even make you more mentally sharp. This is a great way to add movement into your day while still being productive.
Walk After Lunch
After lunch is often a time of decreased productivity. Our bodies tend to get sleepy after a meal, especially if we have consumed carbs and/or sugar. To combat the afternoon slump, take a walk after lunch, before you go back to your desk. Again, like with breaks, you can include coworkers to join you to make it a more social experience.
Move After Work
After your work day is over, find ways to move a little more such as walking around the block before sitting down for dinner. Also if you are an avid television watcher, make it a rule that you will only watch television if you are also exercising at the same time. While this may sound silly, especially to those that you share a home with, doing so will keep your energy up during the evening and may even give your family incentive to join you. Plus if you are exercising while engrossed in a television program, then time will fly by and exercise won’t seem like such a chore. You could use a small step to do your own stair step routine while watching television or lift weights. This small addition to your regular exercise routine can benefit your mood, your energy and your health.
Attend Fitness Classes
Schedule regular fitness classes into your weekly calendar and attend them as you would any other appointment or meeting. Fitness classes are a great way to meet new people and to learn new fitness routines, while getting into shape at the same time. Just make sure that you don’t overbook yourself. Just like the concept of work-life balance, you will need to balance your workout routine with your personal life. Two or three classes per week, along with other exercise can provide a good balance without overwhelming your schedule. Find the right number of classes that will work for you. It also doesn’t hurt to start small, attending only one class per week until you create a routine. Once you have established an easy routine, then you can add more classes to your schedule. Early morning classes and weekend classes are often more convenient for those with busier lifestyles. But whatever your schedule, start a habit of moving more to start feeling healthier and more energetic every day.
